Italian Breakfast Recipes to Start Your Day

Hello there, Reader!

In last week’s newsletter, I shared A Simple Dough with Endless Possibilities! If you missed it, you can catch up HERE.

Breakfast in Italy looks a little different from what we’re used to in North America.

It’s usually something small and sweet alongside your morning coffee.

Maybe a cappuccino with a breakfast cookie or fette biscottate (rusk cookie), a slice of crostata, or a cornetto filled with jam or cream. And yes — having cake for breakfast is perfectly normal in Italy!

This week, I’ve rounded up a few Italian-inspired breakfast recipes, both sweet and savory.

Whether you’re planning a cozy weekend breakfast or need a quick weekday bite, you might discover a new favorite to brighten your mornings.

Savory Bites

Zucchini and eggs in a white plate. Zucchini frittata on a white plate.
Potato frittata in a cast iron pan Calzone on a plate.
  • Zucchini and Eggs: A rustic, quick dish that’s as perfect for breakfast as it is for a light dinner.
  • Zucchini Frittata: Light, fluffy, and full of garden flavor.
  • Potato Frittata: Hearty and satisfying — perfect warm or at room temperature.
  • Homemade Calzones: Portable and filling — an unexpected but fun brunch idea.

Sweet Treats

Italian S cookies on a plate. Anisette cookies on a wooden board.
Rice pudding in a white dessert dish. Ricotta parfait with berries.
  • Italian S Cookies: A crunchy, not-too-sweet cookie, perfect for dunking in coffee.
  • Anisette Sponge Cookies: Light and airy with that classic anise flavor — another dunking favorite.
  • Creamy Rice Pudding: A warm, comforting bowl to start the day, made the old-fashioned way.
  • Ricotta Parfait: Fresh fruit layered with honey-whipped ricotta — light, creamy, and refreshing.
