Tuesday Tip: Before You Bake, Check This One Thing

Hello there, Reader!

Welcome to Tuesday's Tip of the Week!

Every week, I share a quick, practical kitchen idea to help you get more joy and confidence in your cooking.

If you bake quick breads or cookies, this little pantry check can save you from disappointing results.

This Week’s Tip:

Baking powder and baking soda don’t last forever — old leaveners can cause flat, dense bakes.
Even if the expiration date hasn’t passed, once opened, they slowly lose their strength.

How to check them:

For baking soda:
1️⃣ Put 1 teaspoon in a small bowl.
2️⃣ Add a few drops of vinegar — it should bubble vigorously if fresh.

For baking powder:
1️⃣ Put 1 teaspoon in a small bowl.
2️⃣ Add a little hot water — it should fizz immediately if it’s still good.

If you don’t see that reaction, it’s time to replace the jar.

Why This Works:

✅ Baking powder and baking soda create the gas bubbles that make quick breads and cookies rise.
✅ Old leaveners don’t spring into action, so dough stays dense and heavy.
✅ A simple “check” before baking prevents wasted ingredients and disappointment.

💡 Pro Tip

Store open cans of baking soda and baking powder in a cool, dry spot — heat and humidity accelerate their decline.

See It in Action:
I always check my baking powder and baking soda before making my Non-Traditional Irish Soda Bread. Because this recipe depends on the rising power of the soda, fresh leaveners help ensure a tall, tender loaf with good texture every time.
